Henry Avery had a relatively brief pirating career but still became famous in the process. While working as second mate aboard the privateer Charles, the crew was not paid so morale plummeted. So on May 7, 1694, Avery and his fellow mutineers took over Charles while the captain was drunk. Avery became the new captain of the vessel, which was renamed Fancy.
They plundered ships for several years. Some of Avery's crew was caught and sentenced to death but Avery was never captured. It was thought that Avery returned to England, selling his riches to some merchants, but never received his money. He is thought to have gotten into debt, fell ill, and died. Others say he retreated to a tropical island. No one really knows....
