The American flag was raised on
Mount Suribachi at the Battle of
Iwo Jima and photographer Joe
Rosenthal captured the moment.
Iwo Jima was the first place an
invader's flag ever flew over
Japanese home territory. Of the
six young flag raisers, three
would die shortly afterwards at
Iwo Jima. The remaining became
national heroes within weeks,
although they felt the men that
died were the real heroes, not
them. This Iwo Jima is a tribute to
all those brave men.
